They fired me.

...I really would have liked to have it been my decision to leave.

CRAP! That is completely horrible! I really hope you are able to find something soon.

Me too. :/ On the bright side, at least now I have more time to focus on my job search.

Even searching for work can be a full time job. Good luck with the search!

Oh, I'm so sorry. :( That stinks. At least, tomorrow, you can sleep in late, have a nap, go shopping, or do whatever makes you feel better. The getting-a-job process should be easier now that you have experience. These people seem to have gone on a firing spree...is the company losing money?

If they didn't have a valid reason to fire you, you can get unemployment compensation for up to six months at the SEC, as long as you were working there for at least a year. Check with the SEC to see if your employer had a valid reason to fire you. If it's contested, you'll get your money until you can have a hearing.

I have a feeling, for me, the whole interview process will never get easier. I just get too nervous.

Yes, the reason for my "being let go" was based purely on a "financial stand point." Um, yeah, ok. I hope they got rid of the true bleeders, but knowing them, they didn't.

I plan on looking into the VA Employment Commission tomorrow to get unemployment benefits rolling. I do wonder, if it wouldn't be better for me to get a temp job at the new Target? The pay would be crap, but so would unemployment.

Unemployment pay is pretty close to your working pay. From what I hear, you would definitely qualify. Also, it occurred to me today that they fired you after your doctor sent you for further testing on your skin. If your insurance is employer-derived, and if your employer got wind of what's going on with your health, maybe they fired you because they don't want to end up paying more of your health care costs. It hit me that firing you because you have a health issue might be...illegal? I'm no expert, but it's worth thinking about. Got a Virginia lawyer friend?

I say don't try to get a job at Target. Try to get a job commensurate with your education and experience. Being fired without cause is a world different from being fired for cause. It might not feel like it, but I think you're in a good place right now.

Being fired for needing more health care is something that I have considered. The company subsidized 48% of my premium, but nothing else. While it might not be a fantastic coincidence since I was fired three days after I informed them that I needed specialty care, I don't have the energy or the money to bring suit against them for wrongful firing.

Leaving that aside, I agree. After I got over the shock, I realized that this was a golden opportunity to get my life in order. I have been wanting to make changes anyway, now I have the chance to focus exclusively on them.

Wha--? But--!

I do second what Emily said, though. Shut doors and open windows and such--I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the newly opened window makes itself easily found. :-\

Yeah, it was 100% based on financial reasons, or so they say. *sighs*

Thanks. I wonder if it's not too late to get back into school...:p, at least then I wouldn't have to worry about student loans.

Last but not least, I think you have 30 days to use your employer-derived insurance before they cut you off (if your insurance is employer-derived, call your insurance company to get a hang of their policy for laid off people). I recommend getting up-to-date on your annual physical and your dental appointments before your insurance runs out, to be safe. It might also save you money to try to move your skin testing to an earlier date.

Our company is a little screwy in that our insurance terminates the day you terminate. So what I can do now is sign up for COBRA. This means that I'm now paying 102% of the premium cost (the 2% is the "administrative fee") myself. There's nothing quite like being poor and needing specialty care to motivate you to find a new job.
