No matter what the vet says, never, ever clean out a ferret's ears by yourself. You should have at least one other person there, if only for morale support and the ability to say, "It's okay, it's okay, you're not killing him. You're helping him." So you look at said supporter incredulously and think, I WANT TO NOW...

*goes off to clean the new battle wounds chanting, "He goes to the vet on Saturday, he goes to the vet on Saturday..."*

:-O

What's wrong with the ferret that you have to clean out his ears? Does he use his ears like a kangaroo pouch?

No, my poor little guys have ear mites. And the mites are being especially stubborn and not dying like good little bugs should.

Awww. Poor little dudes!

Many years ago, we had a dog with a similar problem - had to put this white lotiony stuff inside her ears. She would shake her head, not fight us. Are your hands even use-able after doing battle with the ferrets?

I'm mostly afraid that I'm going to break something when I wrestle them down to the floor and hold them down to get the liquid in their ears. They really, really hate that.

And my hands are useable after doing this, but only after a lot of NSAIDs.
