English Style Strawberry Shortcake
Mar. 24th, 2005 09:03 pm(aka Strawberry shortcake without the actual shortcake)
by Heather and Karlene
What you need
2 packages of ripe strawberries
1 loaf of Champagne Longue French White bread (or something similar)
Sugar
Ground cinnamon
A tub of butter
What to do
Core the strawberries, then cut them up as fine as you want. Put into a large bowl and put 1/2 cup of sugar on them. Stir. Place a lid of some sort (a plate is generally useful) and put them in the fridge for a couple of hours. I'd suggest if you're going to do this as a dessert, do the strawberries, make dinner, and then start working on the dessert.
Mix a 1/2 cup of sugar and a couple of teaspoons of cinnamon together in a bowl. Set aside. Pre-heat the oven at no more than 375 degrees.
After a couple of hours, start working on the bread. Cut the bread up into slices. Butter each slice on one side, and liberally sprinkle the cinnamon/sugar mix on the buttered side. Take the buttered bread, set them standing up on the pan so that each piece of bread has a side touching the unbuttered side of another piece of bread. Once you have the last piece set up, even if the oven hasn't finished pre-heating, set them in the oven for about ten to fifteen minutes.
Take them out, serve the toast, slather them in the strawberries and enjoy. It is damn good.
