Something I found on my harddrive. I can't remember if I wrote it or not...in reading it again...I can't say I did, but I like it well enough.

Our Generation

Our generation speaks for our generation. There is no single person or group that one could pin this responsibility on. No one person could ever speak for us, we are too diverse. And by diverse, I do not mean ethnically diverse specifically, but that we are all individualistic miniature groups made up of the preppy students, the gothic people, the generic high school students, and many, many more. Some of us could never be categorized into a specific group try as others might to get them there. Our generation is not a generation of Britney Spears', Eminems, Leonardo DiCaprios, we are not a group of haters or tree lovers, nor are we any other such persons. None of them are expansive enough to even begin to glean the surface of our generation. We do not follow the teachings of one person, but of many. If we did, we would be too narrow-minded to survive in this world. What this means is that we have to speak for ourselves if we wish to speak as a generation. Our generation is all about our individuality, the single person. You must take one of us at a time to even begin to scratch the notion of our generation and what we try to say. People of other generations do not seem to be able get their minds around this fact. They do not seem to realize that we do not need to rely on others to relay the messages that they feel should represent us as a whole. As individuals, we can not say the same thing, but as a generation, we do not say anything separate from each other, however. It is a mixed comedic tragedy that creates our generation, with dreams and cynicism lurking around the same darkened alleys of our lives, with our ideals and innocence littering the trash laden floor. But still, where there is life there is hope. That is what our generation is saying. We lived through our childhood, we struggled through our adolescent years, and still we have prevailed. Many of my peers have lost their lives in the struggle. Many our friends have fallen along the way by drugs, violence, and various other disasters that litter our generation as a whole. Still, we strive on, working to find that bright light at the end of the proverbial tunnel, the silver lining behind all of our dark clouds. For as long as we have life, we have hope. It is this hope that will lead our generation to the end of our lives, and start many other lives as well.
